Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is the technology of using radio waves to read the information on a tag. In other words, it is a non-contact automatic identification technology.

There are mainly two types of tags, the passive and active tags. The passive tag can query the radio wave from a short range RFID reader to collect energy and read data. The active tag has a power supply or battery, and the tag does not need to be within the line of sight of the reader, with a read range of up to several hundred meters.

RFID technology is suitable for a variety of applications. Such as door control systems, time and attendance systems, production process monitoring, drug monitoring or warehouse logistics tracking. We can also implant the RFID chips in livestock and pets to positively identify animals.

The demand for RFID is growing. The global RFID market value has grown from $6.96 billion in 2012 to $8.89 billion in 2014. It is expected that by 2026, the market value will increase to 18.68 billion US dollars. (Source: RFID Forecasts, Players & Opportunities 2014-2024)
